Coaches, thank you for volunteering. Here are some reminders that
might help in the upcoming season. Please click on the topic in the table below for
find out more details. Thanks again for all your time and efforts.
**Special
note for Travel Team Coaches regarding SCNM patches for exchange at
tournaments.
1.
Strive to help each player reach his or her full potential. Be sensitive to each childs developmental
needs.
2.
Be a positive role model and set the standard for fair play and sportsmanship with
opponents, referees, administrators, and spectators.
3.
Strive to maintain integrity within the sport.
4. Know and follow the
rules of the game as well as the rules of your club and league.
5. Coaches should
continue his or her education in the sport. You must continue to develop as a coach
if you expect your players to continue to develop as players.
6. Recognize that players
need positive feedback to develop. Never ridicule or yell at players for making
mistakes or losing a competition.
7. Applaud good play by
your team and by opponents. Display good sportsmanship in both victory and defeat.
8.
Above all, keep winning and losing in proper perspective. Remember it is the game that is the true teacher
of the players. You are merely an assistant.
9.
Be organized at all times and ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety
standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of the players.

Coaches are expected to encourage, instruct,
and nurture the players on his or her team. Verbally or physically abusive coaches will
not be tolerated at practices or games. A coachs main focus should be to develop
players for soccer and for life consistent with The SCNM Mission Statement. Let players
enjoy competition at his or her level. Instruct players during practices. Let players play during the game and have an
opportunity to think for him or herself. If you need to coach players during a game,
substitute him or her out, talk on the sidelines, then sub him or her back into the game.
Shouting instructions during a game will only frustrate you and your players. Positive encouragement should be used from the
sidelines. Three words come to mind: SAFETY, FUN, AND SPORTSMANSHIP.

Communication of problems or concerns by
players, parents, or coaches should be handled in a manner consistent with the intent of
the program and the SCNM. If a player or
parent has a concern, he or she should first go to the coach or team manager. If the concern is not resolved, please bring it to
the attention of the Division Coordinator or Club President.

Player safety is paramount to the operation of
the SCNM. Prior to the season:
Ask your parents if anyone is an EMT, nurse, or doctor so he or she may
assist in the event of a serious injury.
Communicate to your players at your first practice that if he or she is
injured or does not feel well during a game, he or she should stay/sit down and raise his
or her hand. Once the game is stopped, the players should be instructed to sit where they
are until play is ready to be resumed.
In the event of lightning, communicate to players that they should clear
the field immediately.
Before each game or practice:
Be sure to know where a phone is
in case of emergency.
Inspect the field, goals, and nets to insure that the physical facility is
safe. Do not play on a field that has
unanchored goals. Moveable soccer goals can
tip over on children. This can happen
not only during games but when children climb on or hang from the crossbar. Educate children on these dangers.
Coaches should bring ice, water,
and basic first aid kits to each game and practice.
In the case of a serious injury:

In 1991, OSHA published the Blood Borne
Pathogens Standard. One of the objectives of this regulation is to protect people, who
have the potential for exposure, from the health hazards associated with potentially
infected body fluids.
In accordance with the Universal Precautions
Guidelines set by this standard, the SCNM requests that anyone involved with open field
injuries wear gloves. During play there are occasional injuries to the nose and mouth
areas, which though not serious, produce a large blood flow. The use of gloves is a
precaution to insure the safety of coaches, referees, and players who may be involved in
direct care. Please make your parents aware of this policy so as not to alarm them.

Please select/ask for a team parent volunteer
at the beginning of the season to assist in managing team tasks such as snacks,
phone tree, etc
A non-coaching parent is much more accessible on the
sidelines and in the parking lot during games and practice than the coach. Team Parent duties include:
1. Set
up a schedule for refreshment responsibilities for each game.
Use roster and game schedule.
Assign each player a game to be responsible
for half-time snacks (oranges) and drinks/snacks for the end of the game.
If the assigned player/parent cannot bring
refreshments on the day he or she is scheduled he or she must contact another
player/parent and switch dates with him or her.
Team parents should call players prior to the
game he or she is scheduled to bring refreshments as a reminder.
2. Develop
a phone tree to contact players and parents when a change of schedule
occurs.
The Team Parent should find one or two other
parents to assist in making these phone calls.
The "phone tree" can also be used
to remind players/parents of refreshment responsibilities, canceled practices/games, and
rescheduled practices/games.
3. Organize
an optional early season get-together for the players and their families.
The Team Parent is responsible for setting up
the event, not providing supplies.
Try to get as many parents involved as
possible.
4. Help
pass out and collect SCNM communications.
Alert parents to SCNM sponsored events such
as fundraisers, clinics, registration, etc.
Provide SCNM Communications Director with
e-mail listing of all players to optimize communication
between The Club and its members.

The SCNM will assign a training schedule and
practice schedule that will be communicated to coaches through the SCNM Field Coordinator. The schedule is designed to maximize the
professional trainers effectiveness, provide ample space for each team to practice
and avoid over-crowding and over use of fields. If
it is impossible for you to adhere to your assigned training or practice schedule, contact
the Field Coordinator before making any changes.

Coaches are responsible for setting out and
putting away corner flags at the respective fields. If another game does not immediately
follow your game please put the corner flags away.

Every effort should be made to play games as
scheduled. For home games, the Division Coordinator or the Referee Coordinator will call
coaches the morning of game day if games are to be canceled due to weather. Periodically,
weather conditions will change during the day, and a decision at game time will need to be
made between coaches and the referee whether to play or reschedule the game. At game time, the final decision rests with the
center referee as to whether the game should be played.
Coaches must contact opposing coaches at least
by Wednesday prior to the scheduled match. During
this call you should confirm game time, game location, and team colors. It is the responsibility of the home team to
change jersey color in the event of a conflict.
Absence of a coach or a particular player is
not sufficient reason to cancel a game. If there are soccer tournaments, town or school
events that will impact attendance at a game, these should be known in advance so the game
can be rescheduled.

Every attempt should be made to play games as
scheduled. If the game is canceled due to weather, NW District rules dictate that every
attempt should be made to make up the game within two weeks. If you are having
difficulty with the opposing coach in attempting to reschedule games, refer the matter to
the Division Coordinator immediately. Prior to finalizing rescheduling commitments
with the opposing coach, review the makeup game commitment with the Division Coordinator
to ensure both the Referee Coordinator and Field Coordinator are in agreement to insure
referee and field availability.

Player passes are the property of the CJSA and
the SCNM. Passes should not be given to players after the season or to other coaches or
clubs without the consent of the SCNM President and Registrar. Player passes should be
returned to the SCNM Registrar at the end of each season.
When player passes are not returned, the club is fined a fee of
$10.00 per
pass and additionally, must produce a new copy of the players birth certificate in
order to register the player for the following season.
This would be a tremendous waste of club resources.

Coaches will be issued standard equipment at
the beginning of each season. If you need additional items due to wear, loss, or breakage,
you may contact the SCNM Equipment Coordinator. Equipment
bags should be returned at the end of each season to the SCNM Equipment
Coordinator.

Players are required to wear soccer type
cleats. Football or baseball cleats are not
acceptable. Each player must wear a pair of
shin guards and keep them on to participate in both games and practices. For safety reasons, players are not allowed to
wear jewelry during practice or games. This includes earrings/cuffs, necklaces, bracelets,
watches, rings, etc

SCNM Parent Coaches are volunteers. To
facilitate their learning and knowledge of the game, the SCNM provides a number of
different training and development opportunities for the coaches. Through the club,
we sponsor a minimum of one coach's clinic each season. Additionally, through the
District and State Associations, there are minimum training recommendations for travel
teams U9 and older. Coaches training, referred to as coaches modules, are offered by
the Connecticult Junior Soccer Association (CJSA). The SCNM reimburses coaches for
his or her training fees for these programs to insure
that the cost does not deter
qualified people from investing his or her time into these efforts.
